Biography

I am a native of Tennessee. I was born and raised in Morristown, a small town about 45 miles northeast of Knoxville. I graduated from Carson-Newman College (cum laude) with a Bachelor of Arts in psychology. While at Carson- Newman, I met Dr. Chris Harper. Upon my graduation from Carson-Newman, Chris invited me to attend Arkansas State University for my graduate education and to help him coach the debate team. While at ASU, I was fortunate enough to be associated with some great debate teams and debate associations. When I look back on my experiences in Arkansas, I cannot help but smile.

Beyond my graduate education at Arkansas State University, I completed my doctorate in instruction, leadership, and higher education administration from The University of Alabama. My primary research interests are in rural development and higher education classification. My dissertation examined the college classifications described by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching.

Prior to my arrival at DSC in the fall of 2004, I taught at Southwest Tennessee Community College in Memphis, TN. Prior to that, I taught as a graduate assistant at Arkansas State University.
